American Tragedy
Sept. 11, 2001 is not a day Americans will ever forget, and the lives of our children will forever be changed. We as a nation will need to take extra precaution, and teach our children how to do likewise. How does an adult ever begin to explain to a child the horrible disaster of September 11, 2001?
Talk to your child about the tragedy: Your school age child most likely found out about the terrorists attack from their teacher. In talking with many school children and teachers, I have found out they were absolutely terrified on Tuesday, September 11th, as they watched the news channel from their classroom. Of course, the students needed to be informed about what was happening.
Many were crying, screaming, and running about the classroom until their teachers reassured them they were safe. After the students realized they were in safe hands, they calmed down considerably. Talk to your child; don’t keep them in the dark about the tragedy. Answer all their questions, and reassure them of their safety, just as teachers did all across our nation Tuesday to quickly restore confidence in their classrooms.
Terror during the night: Some children—especially small children, may need their parent to sleep with them for a night or two after such a terror. This will reassure the child of their safety and security. Some may wake up during the night with nightmares about the attack, especially children in the New York/Washington-Virginia area. They will need extra loving care to get them back into a peaceful sleep. Perhaps a sweet animal story with a warm cup of milk, and lots of hugs will help to settle them down.
Will my religious faith help? During your time of grief and confusion, your religion will play a major role in your family’s life. As parents you can take your children to visit your pastor, rabbi, or other religious leaders. They may have videos for you to watch, or books and pamphlets to read. Also getting involved in counseling groups has always been quite helpful.
