Ask Merlin

Q. Are fairies (faeries) real?
A. Many people believe that dwarfs, fairies, and other creatures do exist. They believe they come from the spirit world, and can enter our world whenever they like.

Q. What do fairies look like?
A. Some say they are between two-six inches high, and are transparent, meaning one can see right through them.

Q. Where do fairies live?
A. They are said to live underground. They come and go through "Fairy Mounds," which is a rotted tree stump covered with moss. Some have been reported to live in caves or clefts of hills.

Q. Do they come out in the daylight?
A. It's been said they only come out at dark after the moon has risen.

Q. Do they have a favorite hangout?
A. It's been told that they like the Hawthorne tree, and enjoy lying under the branches. When the blossoms open they dance happily under the tree and make merriment.

Q. Why are stories called Fairy Tales?
A. Some claim that the author was inspired by fairies. Many of the tales are about fairies themselves, as well as other fantasy creatures such as dragons, elves, brownies, and other beings.

A Fairy's Life
By William Shakespeare

Where the bee sucks there suck I;
In a cowslip's bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
On the bat's back I do fly
After summer merrily.
Merrily, merrily shall I live now,
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.
